Women of the Year 2015
SACRAMENTO, CA – On March 9, 2015, Assemblymember Reginald Byron Jones-Sawyer, Sr. (D-South Los Angeles) honored Charisse Bremond Weaver as “2015 Woman of the Year”. Mrs. Weaver participated in a special assembly floor ceremony highlighting the accomplishments of great women across the state of California. Mrs. Weaver is President and CEO of Brotherhood Crusade, an organization founded in 1968 by her father, to provide necessary resources, program services and a voice of advocacy to traditionally underserved communities within the Los Angeles area.
“Charisse Bremond Weaver was chosen for her community leadership, years of service and vision to enrich the lives of people in and outside of the district. She embodies public service and positively impacts the lives of the underserved and disenfranchised, by providing platforms their transformation” said Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer.
Every young person age 5 to 21 enrolled in Brotherhood Crusade’s year-round youth development program is comprehensively assessed academically, socio-behaviorally and physically prior to enrollment. A personalized plan, which includes financial literacy, business enrichment, community engagement and sports, is created for each child. The organization’s gang reduction efforts were so successful that it was nominated for the National Criminal Justice Association’s Outstanding Criminal Justice Program Award in 2009 by the Governor’s Office of California Gang Reduction and Intervention Program (CalGRIP).
“As Frederick Douglass once said, ‘It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken adults’,” continued Assemblymember Jones-Sawyer. “Under the leadership and direction of Charisse Bremond Weaver, Brotherhood Crusade is building up the lives of California’s youth by providing the love, mentoring and skills they need to thrive.”
